Start with location and exposure
State the country or region, season, temperature, sunlight, wind and whether the cover remains outdoors continuously. These inputs matter more than a generic light-, medium- or heavy-duty label.
Choose weight with handling in mind
More GSM can add body but also increases lifting and installation effort. The woven base, lamination, seams and reinforcement must be evaluated with finished weight.
Specify UV performance honestly
UV additives can slow sunlight degradation but do not create a universal lifespan. Color, formulation, climate, tension, folds and storage when not in use all influence aging.
Design the perimeter and tie-down system
Large hay covers need reliable welded seams, reinforced hems and corners, and fixing points arranged around the stack and wind exposure. Avoid allowing one eyelet to carry a concentrated load.
Manage water and condensation
Use a stack profile that sheds rain, secure the cover without pockets that collect water and allow appropriate ventilation around stored material. The tarp is one part of the storage system.

Is a heavier hay tarp always better?
Not always. It may resist handling better, but unnecessary weight can make installation difficult and does not correct weak seams or tie-down points.

The choice depends on climate and market preference. Lighter or reflective outer colors may reduce heat absorption, while other combinations may be selected for light control and branding.
Can UV life be guaranteed from additive percentage alone?
